Combating Androgenic Alopecia with Probiotics
DARWIN Bioprospecting Excellence, in collaboration with CNCE INNOVACIÓN S.L., has achieved a major breakthrough in the fight against androgenic alopecia (AGA), commonly known as pattern baldness. Through a pioneering clinical trial, DARWIN explored the potential of specific probiotic strains to promote hair growth and reduce hair thinning. The study, recently published in the journal Nutrients, demonstrates the promising role of probiotics in addressing AGA, offering a novel, science-backed solution to a widespread issue.
Problem
Androgenic alopecia affects millions of people worldwide, contributing to significant hair loss and thinning. Current treatments for AGA often come with side effects, are limited in effectiveness, or are financially inaccessible. As the global market for hair loss treatments continues to expand, there is an urgent need for safe, effective, and affordable alternatives that cater to the diverse needs of affected individuals.
Solution
DARWIN Bioprospecting Excellence conducted a randomized, double-blind clinical trial with 136 participants suffering from AGA. Over a 16-week period, the trial evaluated the effects of a unique blend of Lactiplantibacillus probiotic strains. Results were promising: participants in the probiotic group showed a significant reduction in telogen (resting phase) hairs and an increase in hair length and density, especially among those under 37.5 years old. In contrast, the placebo group experienced decreased hair thickness. This innovative use of probiotics offers a natural and potentially more accessible solution for combating AGA, marking an exciting development in the field of hair loss treatment.
